History of Department

The Department of Pediatrics, RangarayaMedicalCollege, Kakinada was started on 04-05- 1958 with Dr. V.P.R.Mallikarjuna Rao as Honorary Lecturer in Pediatrics. Dr.P.S.Murthy was posted as the first regular Professor on 02-04-1969 with a bed Strength of 60.

P.G. diploma Course [D.Ch] was started in 1972 with one Professor and two Assistant Professors. Postgraduate degree course [M.D] was started in 1977. In 1975 one post of lecturer in Pediatrics was sanctioned under the postpartum programme. A premature sick newborn nursery was started in 1976.

In view of the increase in the out patient and inpatient turnover, second unit was created on 1-2-1984 with Dr.N.V.Bhaskara Rao as Professor and Dr.T.C.Verghese & Dr.V.Vikram Kumar as Assistant Professors.

A separate D.T.T.U. [Diarrhea Treatment &Training Unit] was created in 1992 to take care of diarrhoeal disorders as per the W.H.O. guidelines

The posts of Associate Professors were sanctioned in 1997 to meet the new M.C.I. regulations

Third unit of Pediatrics was created on 1st, November, 1999, to fulfill new M.C.I. regulations for 150 M.B.B.S admissions, with Dr.V.Vikram Kumar as Professor [I/C] and Dr.P.V.Subba Rao & Dr.C.Rajendra Prasad as Assistant Professors.

A separate building for training the medical officers under C.S.S.M. Programme was constructed in the year 1997-98 under the auspices of World Bank IPP VI Project. Obstetrics and Neonatology block is sanctioned under 11th Finance Commission Funds.

CONFERENCES and WORKSHOPS :

A number of conferences and workshops were conducted by the Pediatrics department in collaboration with the IAP branch of Kakinada

  • First PALS course in Andhra Pradesh was organized in Kakinada in 1996.

· State conference of IndianAcademy of Pediatrics was conducted in Kakinada in 1997 in an exemplary manner. Speakers of National reputation from Delhi, Chandigarh, Chennai and Mumbai are invited as guest speakers. For the first time the entire program was organized by computers and LCD projectors. This is remembered as one of the best state conferences ever organized in AP. The attendance to this conference was 656, which is a record even today for any state conference.

· Jenner’s symposium on recent vaccines conducted in 1998 for the Pediatricians of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

  • A Pediatric Pulmonolgy workshop was conducted in 1999.
  • A Pediatric Neurology update was conducted in 2000.
  • Pediatric quiz is conducted regularly for undergraduates.
