DEPARTMENT OF microbiology

History of Department

Rangaraya Medical College was established in 16-4-1958 by Medical Education Society (MES) and the Department of Microbiology was started later. The first batch of MBBS students were admitted around 1960- 61 in combination with Department of Pathology under the Professor and HOD of Pathology Dr Ramachandra Rao MD.
The combined Departments were located in Simpson buildings in the Present Ideal College located near Indrapalem Bridge. Later the Department was shifted to ground floor of newly constructed Clinical Laboratory building (Present building) in GGH campus. Later in 1962 the Department was permanently shifted to the Top floor of the present building.
The Microbiology subject was seperated from Pathology as individual faculty in 1962 and the first Professor to the department was late Dr.M.Lakshmi Naidu who was one of the pioneers of Microbiology in this state and in India .She strived hard to uplift the department with several research activities along with quality training to undergraduates. She had many National, and International publications to her credit.
Dr M. Satyavani is the second qualified Microbiologist who has joined to this Department.
Post graduation courses were started in the year 1977 and the first PG was Dr.A.Gururaj Kumar who has retired from his services as professor and HOD of Dept of Microbiology SVMC at Tirupati. PG seats were enhanced from 1-2.and there on up to 6 nos per year with sufficient faculty members. So far 43 students received M.D.degrees.10 PGs are in the course.
Reemerged pathogens like Helicobacter pylori, Leptospira, MDR TB, various species of streptococci, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, fungi, are isolated and identified accurately.
From 1998 onwards enormous work was done in the Dept regarding HIV/ AIDS epidemic in the form of sentinel surveillances, voluntary counselling and testing, CD4 estimation, research on drug resistance patterns of HIV and so on. This dept was chosen to assist in many project works in HIV/ AIDS by the prestigious institutes like NIN Hyderabad and NARI Pune.
The Integrated Disease Surveillance Program wing was attached to our dept and we are assisting the district authorities in diagnosing infectious disease epidemics. One of the Assistant professors will be a member of the District task force to visit the epidemic and vaccination programme problems and assist district and state health authorities.
Several Conferences and CMEs were conducted in the dept. Organised State Level CMEs on Immunology, Computers, Fluorescence microscopy, Parasitology, Virology.
Received Best Paper Award - Senior Faculty, Best Papers awards in IAMM APCON annual conferences, Conducted Symposium on "Emerging Vector borne Viral infections"
Dr,KR.L.SuryaKirani served as Treasurer 2003-2006 and Vice President-2006-2009 of IAMM AP state chapter.Department of Microbiology ,RMC has formed the constitution ,framed the rules and regulations under the guidance of Dr.C.S.Bhaskaran ,who entrusted the task to Dr.K.R.L.SuryaKirani.
Dr.O.Satyanarayana served as Secretary and Dr.P.Kasturi as member of the executive of both IAMM AP Chapter and APGADA,KAKINADA BRANCH.
The Department in collaboration with Pathology Department conducted 3 state conferences .Under the leadership of Dr. V. SanthaKumari the Department conducted state conference of Microbiology in February 2003 after the division of Pathology and Microbiology.

Future Plans

Dr.K.R.L.Surya Kirani,Prof.&HOD,Microbiology,RMC,Kakinada
Evidence based medicine is the requirement of the day. Research in infectious diseases is required for faster diagnosis and treatment of the drug resistant infections. We need a modern research lab to do and develop different rapid diagnostic tests.
Maintaining high-quality clinical microbiology laboratories on the site of the institution that they serve is the current best approach for managing today's problems of emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial agent resistance by providing good patient care outcomes that actually save money . Patients infected with multidrug-resistant organisms are now seen routinely in both community and hospital settings. Effective surveillance (for resistance identification and control) depends on a fully equipped, efficient, and accurate microbiology laboratory that maintains close contact with clinicians
A clinical microbiology laboratory that is staffed and equipped to fully handle local patient care and infection control needs, and that has the on-site infrastructure capability to report their data to a national repository, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention there will be an annual reduction in the costs of health care-associated infections, this savings amounts to a 5-fold return on the investment made for better patient care. Dedicated leadership and staff are important to reliable testing, and  the medical director of microbiology can participate in institution-wide functions, such as infection control and the work of the antibiotic formulary committee as part of his or her work responsibilities on site.
Training future health care practitioners. Physicians of the future are obliged to receive clinical training to be licensed. They start in the medical care setting as students, interns, and residents. Ready access to the clinical microbiology laboratory has a major impact on these trainees. This interaction is where they learn the importance of proper specimen collection, ordering practices, laboratory utilization, and the wise use of antimicrobial agents; this training will influence their entire practice career. .
In summary, to maintain the knowledge base for the future health care providers in fact, to enhance their level of understanding, this education of the next generation of doctors must be preserved. These laboratories directly serve the patient through accurate and timely detection of infectious microbes, and this information is critical to the quality treatment of infectious diseases. Successful detection and interpretation of results clearly require adequate staffing with specially trained medical technologists and supervision by laboratory directors who have received training in a clinical and/or medical microbiology program. The microbiology laboratory also is a crucial component of the infection control team responsible for preventing health care-associated infections, thus promoting good patient care outcomes that save money.
