HISTORY OF DEPTARTEMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY

Rangaraya Medical College was established on 16-04-1958 by the Medical Education Society (MES), and the Department of Biochemistry was started later. The first batch of MBBS students was admitted around 1958–1959. The department was established from the inception of the college as a basic medical subject in the 2nd year of MBBS from 1958. Dr. D. Narayana Rao was the first Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and acted as the Principal during the formative months of the college. Later, the Biochemistry Department was separated in 1961and is being taught to first year MBBS Students . The department flourished under the guidance and direction of many eminent professors.
In 1978, the Postgraduate (PG) course in Biochemistry was started, and since then, many students have obtained their Master’s degree from this department. With the commencement of postgraduate training, research work has been actively undertaken on various topics in the field of Biochemistry. The department successfully conducted the 11th Annual Conference of the Association of Medical Biochemists of India (AMBICON) from 28th to 30th November 2003.
The Biochemistry Department has a well-equipped student laboratory with two practical halls, a lecture gallery, and a demonstration room in the college campus. The department also has a separate block in the Government General Hospital, which houses the Central Laboratory in the Dhirubhai Ambani 24-hour laboratory block for quality analysis of patient samples. This 24-hour lab was established in April 2016 for better patient care, diagnosis, and service. The hospital block also includes a seminar hall for PG academic activities and a small laboratory for PG practical and specialized biochemical tests.
The number of PG seats was increased from 2 to 4 candidates from the 2015 batch onwards. In addition, Paramedical courses such as B.Sc. (MLT) were introduced in 2011, and B.Sc. Nursing was introduced in 2018, reflecting the continuous growth and development of the department. BSc Paramedical courses  were also introduced later on.
