HISTORY OF PULMONOLOGY DEPARTMENT
Department was started in 1956 with 40 beds. Dr Bhavanarayana was the first in charge of the department followed by Dr Abdul Ghani, Dr K Kotilingam was the first Professor and HOD of the Department, later followed by Dr Brahmananda Rao, Dr Thipanna, Dr Sriramulu, Dr S Satyasri, Dr M Raghavendra Rao. Presently Dr V. Surya Kumari is the Professor and HOD. The Department consists of the department earlier consisted of one male and one female ward. Female ward was constructed in around 1940s and the earlier male ward (at present with negative pressure rooms) was constructed in around 1975 with the aid of state and district TB association. The bed strength in the ward was then increased to 80.
At present the department is working with 2 chambered designated OP room in OP block. A 30 bedded ward in ENT block with oxygen facility. A 40 bedded designated Pulmonology block for the step-down management. A 20 bedded designated Covid ward.
First Post Graduate seat was allotted in 1982 with one M.D and DTCD. One M.D seat was added from 2010 making it two M.D and one DTCD per academic year. One more M.D seat was added from 2017 making it three M.D and one DTCD per academic year. One more M.D seat was added and one DTCD was removed from 2019 making it Four M.D seats per academic year. Now the Pulmonology block is catering the patients of East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, parts of Vizag districts and Union Territory Yanam.
