HISTORY OF MICROBIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Rangaraya Medical College was established in 16-4-1958 by Medical Education Society (MES) and the Department of Microbiology was started later.The first batch of MBBS students were admitted around 1960- 61 in combination with Department of Pathology under the Professor and HOD of Pathology Dr RamachandraRao MD.
The combined Departments were located in Simpson buildings in the Present IdealCollege located near IndrapalemBridge.Later the Department was shifted to ground floor of newly constructed Clinical Laboratory building (Present building) in GGH campus. Later in 1962 the Department was permanently shifted to the Top floor of the present building .
 The Microbiology subject was seperated from Pathology as individual faculty in 1962 and the first Professor to the department was lateDr.M.Lakshmi Naidu who was one of the pioneers of Microbiology in this stateand in India .She strived hard to uplift the department with several research activities along with quality training to undergraduates. She had many National, and International publications to her credit.
Dr M. Satyavani is the second qualified Microbiologist who has joined to this Department.

Post graduation courses were started in the year 1977 and the first PG was Dr.A.Gururaj Kumar who has retired from his services as professor and HOD of Dept of Microbiology SVMC at Tirupati. PG seats were enhanced from 1-2.and there on up to 6 nos per year with sufficient faculty members. So far 43 students received M.D.degrees.10 PGs are in the course.
Reemerged pathogens like Helicobacter pylori, Leptospira, MDR TB, various species of streptococci,Corynebacteriumdiphtheriae, fungi, are isolated and identified accurately.        
From 1998 onwards enormous work was done in the Dept regarding HIV/ AIDS epidemic in the form of sentinel surveillances, voluntary counselling and testing, CD4 estimation, research on drug resistance patterns of HIV and so on. This dept was chosen to assist in many project works in HIV/ AIDS by the prestigious institutes like NIN Hyderabad and NARI Pune.
The Integrated Disease Surveillance Program wing was attached to our dept and we are assisting the district authorities in diagnosing infectious disease epidemics. One of the Assistant professors will be a member of the District task force to visit the epidemic and vaccination programme problems and assist district and state health authorities.
Several Conferences and CMEs were conducted in the dept. Organised State Level CMEs on Immunology, Computers, Fluorescence microscopy, Parasitology, Virology.
Received Best Paper Award –Senior Faculty, Best Papersawards in IAMM APCON annual conferences,Conducted Symposium on  “Emerging  Vector borne Viral infections”
Dr,KR.L.SuryaKirani served as Treasurer 2003-2006 and Vice President-2006-2009 of IAMM AP state chapter.Department of Microbiology ,RMC has formed the constitution ,framed the rules and regulations under the guidance of Dr.C.S.Bhaskaran ,who entrusted the task to Dr.K.R.L.SuryaKirani.
    Dr.O.Satyanarayana served as Secretary and Dr.P.Kasturi as member of the executive of both IAMM AP Chapter and APGADA,KAKINADA BRANCH.
The Department in collaboration with Pathology Department conducted 3 state conferences .Under the leadership of Dr. V. SanthaKumari the Department conducted state conference of Microbiology in February 2003 after the division of Pathology and Microbiology.
