HISTORY OF PSYCHIATRY DEPARTMENT

The Department of Psychiatry, RMC was established way back in 1960s, when the Government Hospital at Kakinada was upgraded as General Hospital in 1959 to serve as Teaching hospital.
A separate unit for Psychiatry was built with two wards, one for Male and one for Female with 15 beds in each. In 2023 NMC inspection was conducted in the department to access the feasibility of starting PG courses, after which four Post Graduate seats were allotted. The first batch of post graduates joined the department of Psychiatry in October 2023. The college currently has an active Department of Psychiatry and runs Undergraduate teaching and MD (Psychiatry) Postgraduate programme with regular Out Patient and In-patient facilities. Other interventions like Modified Electro-Convulsive Therapy, Alcohol and Drug De- Addiction Centre, Psychological Assessments are also available.
