HISTORY OF PAEDIATRICS & NEONATOLOGY DEPARTMENT

    
The department of paediatrics , Rangaraya medical college, Kakinada was started on 04-05-1958 with Dr.Mallikarjuna rao as honorary lecturer in paediatrics. Dr.P.S.Murthy was posted as the first regular professor on 02-04-1969 with a bed strength of 60.

In 1975 one post of lecturer in paediatrics was sanctioned under the postpartum programme.   A premature sick newborn nursery was started in 1976.

In view of the increase in the patient   turnover, second unit was created on 01-02-1984 with Dr.N.V. Bhaskar rao as professor and Dr.T.C Verghese and Dr.Vikram kumar as assistant professors.

A separate D.T.T.U (Diarrhoea treatment and training unit} was created in 1992 to take care of  diarrhoeal disorders as per the WHO guidelines.

The post of Associate professors were sanctioned in 1997 to meet the new M.C.I regulations.

Third unit of Paediatrics was created on 1st November ,1999 to fullfill new MCI regulations for 150 M.B.B.S admissions with Dr.P.V. Subbarao and Dr.C.Rajendra Prasad as assistant professors. At present 3 professors, 2 associate professors and 11 assistant professors were sanctioned.

Diploma course in paediatrics(2 seats) was started   with one professor and two assistant professors in 1972. MD  course in pediatrics was started in 1977.  D.M. Neonatology course was started in 2012-13. This is the first institute in combined state of Andhra pradesh to have DM neonatology.

A separate building for training the medical officers under C.S.S.M programme was constructed in the year 1997-1998 under the auspices of world bank  IPP VI project. obstetrics and neonatology block is sanctioned under the 11th finance commission funds.

On 25-06-2000 the newly constructed paediatric emergency services ward , which included the paediatric intensive care unit and the neonatal intensive care unit was inaugurated. SNCU was sanctioned under NRHM in the year 2012-13.

Lot of additions were made to the neonatal intensive care unit with the help of many charitable organizations like coromandel group, AMG international and many kind hearted people.

Neonatology unit attached to the department provides level III neonatal care to sick newborn of the two districts east and west Godavari with a population of 2 crores. It runs a separate daily outpatient service for the neonates. Average outpatient attendance will be 50/day.

Number of admissions in NICU gradually increased from 60-75/month to 280/month by 2017. The department has given special attention to neonatal care and could bring down  the mortality significantly. This unit also conducts ROP screening, OAE, BERA regularly. NICU owns 40 warmers, 4 ventilators, 7 CPAP, 20 syringe pumps, 35 Phototherapy units, bedside 2d echo, mobile  X ray unit.
PICU provides critical care with a bed strength of 18 and well equipped with 2 ventilators, 2 CPAP , multipara monitors,syringe pumps, bed side ultrasound machine, mobile X ray unit.

Nutrional rehabilitation center was stared in  January 2012.

NICU has 40 warmers.

Department owns separate   air conditioned lecture halls for undergraduates and postgraduates, which can accommodate 250 students.

Department has all the advanced audio visual aids for teaching programmes. The dept library has 800 speciality books and internet facility.

Department regularly conducts quiz in paediatrics for undergraduate students. The first PALS course in AP was organised in this institution in 1996. The state conference of IAP was held in this institution in 1997.
